GROUP PROJECT 3:

SOCIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION

SOCIOLOGY

MR. PAPPAS

Peer Evaluation Rubric

Student Projects

Goal: To develop a research proposal that demonstrates your understanding of sociological investigation

Process: You will work in teams of 2 or 3 students to complete the following tasks. The results of your efforts will be submitted as:

  1. 2-page typed research abstract  which will receive a peer evaluation from your classmates
  2. PowerPoint version for presentation to class

Reference: Text Chapter 2

Remember you are designing a research project.
You will not actually undertake the research.

Format:

1. Define a topic of investigation. Ideally it should be a subject that you are interested in and one that will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of sociological investigation.

2. Assess the requirements for carrying out the research. What resources are necessary to support your research? How much time will you need? What is needed as far as equipment, facilities, research subjects, or travel?

3. Specify the questions you are going to ask. What are you trying to find out? Are you seeking to explore an unfamiliar social setting or culture? To describe some category of people? Or to investigate cause and effect between variables?

4. Consider the ethical issues involved in the research. Not all research raises ethical issues, but you should be sensitive to this matter. Will you promise anonymity to the subjects? Can your research harm anyone?

5. Devise a research strategy. Consider all major research strategies before deciding how to proceed.

6. Decide how you would record and analyze your findings.

Research Options:

  • Experimental
  • Survey
  • Participant observations
  • Secondary analysis
  • Or some creative combination

Assignment:

Prepare a brief proposal for approval. (Due December 2nd)

Prepare a 2-page typed abstract (Due December 7th) which addresses each of the proceeding steps.

Prepare a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation (Due December 10th) to share with class.

Computer lab time has been reserved for December 7-10
